To take advantage of all the TAD-1027’s
features, we recommend that you read
this manual completely before you use
the TAD.
READ THIS BEFORE
INSTALLATION
Your TAD-1027 conforms to federal reg-
ulations, and you can connect it to most
telephone lines. However, each device
you connect to the phone line draws
power from the phone line. We refer to
this power draw as the device’s ringer
equivalence number, or REN. The REN
is on the label on the bottom of the TAD.
This TAD has been tested and certified
to comply with all applicable UL and FCC
standards.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of
fire or shock hazard, do not ex-
pose this product to rain or mois-
ture.
If you are using more than one phone or
other device on the line, add up all the
RENs. If the total is more than five (or
three in rural areas), your phone(s) might
not ring and your TAD might not answer.
If ringer operation is impaired, remove a
device from the line.
CAUTION
RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK.
!
DO NOT OPEN.
CAUTION: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF
ELECTRIC SHOCK, DO NOT REMOVE
COVER OR BACK. NO USER-SERVICE-
ABLE PARTS INSIDE. REFER SERVIC-
ING TO QUALIFIED PERSONNEL.

tric shock. Do not open the product’s
case.
Your TAD-1027 complies with Part 68 of
FCC Rules. You must, upon request,
provide the FCC Registration Number
and the REN to your phone company.
Both numbers are on the label on the
bottom of the TAD.

INSTALLATION
Note: The TAD cannot answer and
record incoming calls without AC power.
CHOOSING A LOCATION
Select a location that is near both a mod-
ular telephone jack and an AC outlet.
Follow these steps to install the backup
battery.
Your TAD-1027 connects directly to a
modular telephone line jack. If the tele-
phone line jack is not a modular jack, you
must update the wiring. You can convert
the wiring yourself, using jacks and
adapters available at your local Ra-
dioShack store. Or, you can let the tele-
phone company update the wiring for
you. The USOC number of the jack to be
installed is RJ11C.
1. Slide the battery compartment cover
in the direction of the arrow, then lift
off the cover.
Illus. showing removal
of battery compartment
cover.
2. Snap the battery’s contacts firmly to
the TAD-1027’s connector and place
the battery into the compartment.
INSTALLING THE
BACKUP BATTERY
The TAD requires AC power to operate.
However, if AC power fails or you unplug
the TAD-1027, a 9-volt backup battery
(not supplied) saves the messages and
the settings for the day, time, and remote
operation security code. We recommend
you use an alkaline battery, such as Ra-
dioShack Cat. No. 23-553.
Illus. showing
connection of connector
to battery terminals.
Warning: If the TAD’s modular line cord
is already connected to the telephone
line jack, disconnect it before you install
the backup battery. This reduces the risk
of electric shock.
3. Replace the cover.
Caution: Always use a fresh battery of
the required size and recommended
type.

• The TAD-1027 sounds a 3-tone
beep if you press the wrong button.
Notes:
• When the memory is full, the TAD-
1027 answers the call after two
rings and announces, “Memory is
full.” Delete some of the old mes-
sages to make room in memory
(see “Using Remote Commands”).
• You must record an outgoing mes-
sage before you can remotely set
the TAD-1027 to answer calls.
1. Dial your phone number.
• If the TAD-1027 is set to answer-
off and an outgoing message is

(toll saver), the TAD-1027 answers
after two rings if you have new mes-
sages (ones you have not played). If
there are no new messages, the
TAD waits for four rings before it
answers. This gives you time to
hang up before the TAD-1027
answers so you can avoid unneces-
sary long-distance charges.
• If the TAD-1027 is set to answer-
on, it answers according to the
number of rings you set.
2. Within 8 seconds, enter the remote

CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Your RadioShack TAD-1027 Digital Telephone Answering System with Day/Time
Voice Stamp is an example of superior design and craftsmanship. The following sug-
gestions will help you care for the TAD-1027 so you can enjoy it for years.
Keep the TAD-1027 dry. If it gets wet, wipe it dry immediately. Liquids
might contain minerals that can corrode the electronic circuits.
Use and store the TAD-1027 only in normal temperature environments.
Temperature extremes can shorten the life of electronic devices, dam-
age batteries, and distort or melt plastic parts.
Keep the TAD-1027 away from dust and dirt, which can cause prema-
ture wear of parts.
Handle the TAD-1027 gently and carefully. Dropping it can damage cir-
cuit boards and cases and can cause the TAD to work improperly.
Use only a fresh battery of the required size and type. Batteries can leak
chemicals that damage your TAD-1027’s electronic parts.
Wipe the TAD-1027 with a damp cloth occasionally to keep it looking
new. Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents, or strong deter-
gents to clean the TAD.
Modifying or tampering with the TAD-1027’s internal components can cause a mal-
function and might invalidate your TAD’s warranty and void your FCC authorization to
operate it. If your TAD-1027 is not performing as it should, take it to your local Ra-
dioShack store for assistance. If the trouble is affecting the telephone lines, the phone
company can ask you to disconnect your TAD until you have resolved the problem.
17

43-787.fm Page 18 Monday, August 16, 1999 8:11 AM
To eliminate interference, you can try
one or more of the following corrective
measures:
THE FCC WANTS YOU TO
KNOW
In the unlikely event that your TAD-1027
causes problems on the telephone line,
the telephone company can temporarily
discontinue your service. If this happens,
the telephone company attempts to noti-
fy you in advance. If advance notice is
not practical, the telephone company no-
tifies you as soon as possible and advis-
es you of your right to file a complaint
with the FCC.
• Reorient or relocate the receiving
radio or TV antenna.
• Increase the distance between the
TAD-1027 and the radio or TV.
• Use outlets on different electrical cir-
cuits for the TAD-1027 and the radio
or TV.
Consult your local RadioShack store if
the problem still exists.
Also, the telephone company can make
changes to its lines, equipment, opera-
tions, or procedures that could affect the
operation of this TAD. The telephone
company notifies you of these changes
in advance so you can take the neces-
sary steps to prevent interruption of your
telephone services.
LIGHTNING
Your TAD-1027 has built-in protection
circuits to reduce the risk of damage
from surges in telephone line and power
line current. These protection circuits
meet or exceed the FCC requirements.
However, lightning striking the telephone
or power lines can damage your TAD.
Your TAD-1027 complies with the limits
for a Class B digital device as specified in
Part 15 of FCC Rules. These limits pro-
vide reasonable protection against radio
and TV interference in a residential area.
However, your TAD might cause TV or
radio interference even when it is operat-
ing properly.
Lightning damage is not common. Nev-
ertheless, if you live in an area that has
severe electrical storms, we suggest that
you unplug the TAD-1027 during storms
to reduce the possibility of damage.
